Filipino priest withdraws from appointment as bishop of Tagbilaran, citing ‘my own human limitations and inadequacies’

More than a month after Pope Leo XIV named him to the role, Filipino priest Father Gerardo Saco Jr. has withdrawn from his appointment as bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran in the Philippines.

According to UCA News, Fr. Saco had been appointed March 25 to succeed Archbishop Alberto Uy, who was transferred to an archdiocese. Fr. Saco, who has served as diocesan administrator since October 2025, was scheduled to receive episcopal ordination May 26. However, he announced his withdrawal from the appointment on May 5. 

“After much prayer and careful discernment, I humbly inform the faithful of the Diocese of Tagbilaran of my decision not to proceed with my Episcopal Ordination,” he said. “I sincerely ask for your understanding regarding this change of heart. It comes from a deep awareness of my own human limitations and inadequacies.”

The Vatican has accepted Fr. Saco’s decision after communication with the papal nuncio, UCA News reported. 

In his official May 5 statement, Fr. Saco assured the diocese of his continued commitment to the priesthood, adding that he strives to “journey with [the diocese] in faith and in the Risen Lord.” 

Archbishop Uy said the withdrawal has brought “sadness” to the diocese but Church leaders respect Fr. Saco’s decision and trust that it was made after “deep and prayerful discernment.”

The diocese serves the southern half of Bohol province and includes 60 parishes. Fr. Saco will remain diocesan administrator while the Holy See begins the process of selecting a new bishop.
