Much of what is known about St. Agnes is legend or speculation. Tradition holds that she was raised in a wealthy Christian household. She had promised herself to Christ as a virgin, but her extreme beauty made many men desire her. Agnes loved God and her vocation more than any man, however, and refused any man who asked for her hand in marriage.
One young man was so enraged by her refusal, that he turned her over to the authorities, accusing her of being a Christian. The governor's son, Procop, asked for her hand, and legend holds that the young girl responded: "I am already promised to the Lord of the Universe. He is more splendid than the sun and the stars, and He has said He will never leave me!" The governor himself attempted to change Agnes’ mind with gifts, but she held true. He then placed her in chains, hoping to scare her into denying her faith. The chains had the opposite effect, making Agnes shine with joy at the prospect of suffering for her beloved.
She was then sent to a house of prostitution, as punishment, but an angel protected her. One man lost his sight for looking at her lustfully. It was restored only through prayer. She was at last condemned to death. The onlookers begged her to save herself. Agnes was in her early teens, and witnesses were horrified to see such a young beautiful girl ready to die. According to tradition, Agness responded: "I would offend my Spouse," if I were to try to please you. He chose me first and He shall have me!" Some versions state that she was protected from fire when they tried to burn her, and ultimately had to be beheaded.
Saint Agnes, pray for us!
