‘Sister, Soldier, Surgeon’: An upcoming docudrama about Sister Dede Byrne
Two years after the incredible biography Sister, Soldier, Surgeon: The Life and Courage of Sister Deirdre Byrne, M.D was released, Zeale, in collaboration with CatholicVote, is announcing that it will create a 10-minute docudrama about the life of Sister Dede Byrne’s incredible life.

Two years after the incredible biography Sister, Soldier, Surgeon: The Life and Courage of Sister Deirdre Byrne, M.D was released, Zeale, a project of CatholicVote, in collaboration with best-selling author Leisa Marie Carzon are partnering to bring Sister Dede Byrne’s incredible life to the screen as a 10-minute docudrama.
Sister Dede served as an Army surgeon in five countries, as CatholicVote previously reported, before joining the religious order Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts. She made national headlines in 2020 when she spoke at the Republican National Convention, urging Republicans to uphold the dignity of life and speaking out against the horrors of abortion.
Sister Dede’s biography, written by Leisa Marie Carzon, is a moving testament to the work and faith of the religious sister. Now, Zeale has the chance to bring that story to life.
“Sister Dede’s incredible and inspirational life as a Sister, US Army Colonel, and surgeon has already led to countless conversions,” CatholicVote wrote in its explanation of the project. “Her story of service on the battlefield, in the E.R., and on the front lines of the pro-life movement spark the imagination, attract even non-believers, and is a clarion call to holiness. Our children and grandchildren deserve to know.
“Best-selling author Leisa Marie Carzon and CatholicVote’s Zeale are excited to help bring this incredible story to life, with hopes of it incentivizing a subsequent box-office, feature-film.”
We are pleased to announce that we have reached the funding goal and the 10-minute documentary is on track for the July 4 release. Funds will no longer be received through this landing page.
