Several high-profile murder cases are expected to move forward in court in 2026, including those of the alleged assassins of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and TurningPoint USA founder Charlie Kirk, according to a FOX News roundup.
Luigi Mangione, who is from a prominent Baltimore Catholic family, is charged with fatally shooting Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024 and has pleaded not guilty to the murder, as Zeale previously reported. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty against him. He faces charges in New York, Pennsylvania, and federal court, FOX News reported.
He appeared in court Dec. 1, 2025, for a pre-trial hearing, during which his attorneys attempted to throw out evidence against him that they argued was illegally obtained. According to FOX News, trials have not yet been scheduled but his next court hearing is slated for Jan. 9.
Robinson, who has been charged with assassinating Kirk in September while he was speaking at an event at Utah Valley University, has not entered a plea, according to CBS News. Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty here as well.
FOX News reported that Robinson will appear in court Jan. 16 for a preliminary hearing, during which “prosecutors are expected to call witnesses to the stand to establish probable cause before the case heads to trial.” The hearing will include cross-examination of the witnesses by Robinson’s attorneys and could result in the finding of previously undisclosed evidence.
According to FOX News, Rex Heuermann, the New York architect facing counts of first- and second-degree murder in connection with the Gilgo Beach serial killings, will also stand trial in 2026. Authorities claim that he tortured, mutilated, and killed seven women, with the earliest alleged murder occurring in 1993. If convicted, he faces life in prison without parole, the outlet reported. He has pleaded not guilty, and his next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 13.
Nick Reiner, son of prominent filmmaker Rob Reiner, will appear in court Jan. 7 in connection with the murders of Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. As Zeale previously reported, Reiner was taken into custody Dec. 14 after his parents were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood, California, home.
FOX News reported that the murder occurred after Reiner and his father had a fight at a Christmas party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. According to the outlet, Reiner has reportedly been diagnosed with schizophrenia, which will likely cause his attorneys to present an insanity defense. If convicted, he could face the death penalty; however, as Zeale previously reported, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a moratorium on capital punishment in 2019, halting executions during his time in office.
Finally, former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who was convicted of fatally shooting his wife and son, will appear in court Feb. 11, FOX News reported. He has an appeal pending and is currently serving life in prison without parole.
